Thomas Baird came to Altona, IL as a young man. He and Janet moved to Shelby, NE. In 1900, they looked at homestead land in Northwest Territories. On March 4, 1901, they moved to a rented farm at Lacombe, taking the six youngest children. Soon after, they filed on a homestead east of Lacombe, where they were joined by other members of the family. This settlement took the name of Red Willow. It soon became a community in Alberta, at first a school and post office, then a grocery store, hardware store, blacksmith shop and feed mill were added. They retired in Britsh Columbia, first at Victoria, then to Okanagan Valley, and finally to Vancouver. They are buried there.
